Reaching the largest demographic

Age continues to be one of the strongest predictors of digital non-participation: fewer than 60% of American seniors have wireline broadband access at home, which in the current public health crisis can have serious consequences.

As Baby Boomers age into retirement, the number of older Americans is projected to rise dramatically over the coming years. This growth is reason to celebrate, as more Americans lead healthier, more fulfilling, and longer lives. It also presents the new challenge of ensuring a growing number of older adults have digital access.

The need

Reaching older adults across the country

This shift is also driven by our increasing life expectancy. In 2016, the average life expectancy in the United States was 78.6 years, an increase of more than five years in just the past thirty years. This trend is expected to continue: in 2060, the life expectancy for a woman in the United States is projected to be 90.8 years.

The need for increasing digital connectivity among aging Americans is clear and growing. Aging Connected’s goal of connecting one million seniors with broadband internet by June of 2022 only scratches the surface, but with the help of consortium members, partners, drivers of change, and decision-makers, we hope to galvanize a ripple of change that will continue to grow.
