With Succession done and dusted, Sunday nights on HBO now belong to The Idol—the buzzy Sam Levinson series about a troubled pop star named Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) falling under the sway of a charismatic Svengali (cocreator Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. The Weeknd). As episode one proves, though, that logline may intentionally obfuscate the show’s real core dynamic. After the airing of just one episode, Savannah Walsh has a theory about how the season may actually end—thanks to the premiere’s decision to show us Jocelyn watching a very telling erotic thriller.
