The Beautiful Chaos of the Best-Supporting-Actress Race
|
From the moment The Fabelmans star Michelle Williams submitted herself as a lead actress, Oscar-watchers have known that best supporting actress would be the category to watch this year. And now that awards are finally being handed out, that’s absolutely come to pass. On Friday, Keke Palmer won the award from the New York Film Critics Circle for her performance in Nope, a surprise not only because she’s arguably a lead, but because it’s a genre film from the summer that’s been less visible in awards campaigns. And then, on Thursday, the National Board of Review announced its picks, with Janelle Monae named its best-supporting-actress winner for her tricky role in Glass Onion.
From here on out it might only get more complicated—the Golden Globes announce their nominees on Monday, with the Critics Choice Awards following on Wednesday, and presumably other supporting-actress contenders like Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and Claire Foy and Jessie Buckley (Women Talking) will be recognized there. Or, hey, maybe there will be more surprises! On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, hosts David Canfield, Rebecca Ford, Richard Lawson, and Katey Rich look at the wide-open field, even as best supporting actor seems to have found a front-runner in Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Ke Huy Quan. (To be noted, however: The episode was recorded before Brendan Gleeson won at the National Board of Review for Banshees of Inisherin.)

The episode also includes a look at the lineup for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, which includes a wide range of starry indies, potential breakouts, and—who knows—maybe yet another future best-picture winner.
