And now that the HBO hit is over, Joy Press isn’t sure whether TV or streaming will ever see its like again. As she wonders in the finale’s wake: “Can an idiosyncratic original series created on a similar scale even come to fruition in a world of corporate mergers and franchise-mania, as risk-averse execs lean into projects based on existing intellectual property—and yank series from their platforms that aren’t doing blockbuster numbers?”
