Great News at the Chicago Reader

From Amber Nettles, SVP of Growth & Strategy
Here we are, almost done with January, and we already have great news to share (with more to come)! We announced yesterday some new hires, further expanding our team and ensuring our continued success. We also just printed a fantastic Theater & Arts preview (see the PDF here), with our heads already turning about the three others planned for this year.
While it’s about 5 degrees outside, I’m keeping myself warm thinking about Best of Chicago, and dreaming about our in-person events we’re planning for this spring and beyond.
A quick reminder, our first Windy City Times insert of the year will be in our Feb. 23 issue, and there’s time to reserve space in that issue (or lock in super low rates for all four quarterly inserts!). “For more than 35 years, Windy City Times has presented a weekly reflection of life in Chicago’s LGBT community, a printed product that has followed the path of the gay rights movement and adapted to a changing media landscape.” (From the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame)
Stay warm out there!

Branded content in 2023
Tell Your Story to our Readers
The Reader loves to work with businesses and individuals with great stories to tell, and we’re happy to discuss the various options for branded content series! For an example, check out
Cityscape, a branded content partnership of the Chicago Architecture Center, Chicago History Museum, and Wrightwood 659, along with the Reader’s architecture coverage. You can also see examples from LaLaMove, DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Tourist Office of Spain in Chicago, along with our Bull Horn series (sponsored by Red Bull in 2021) and our Poetry Corner (created in partnership with the Poetry Foundation). Contact us to talk about telling your story!

The Reader, en español

Sponsors sought to support Spanish translations
To better serve our Spanish-speaking communities, the Reader is now translating and publishing some of its stories into Spanish. We’re seeking sponsors to help underwrite the cost of this endeavor. Sponsorship packages (click here to view) include print and digital tags, as well as additional media placements. Contact us today to partner in this project.

Jen B. Larson exalts our punk mothers in the new book Hit Girls
I first heard about Jen B. Larson when she played in Swimsuit Addition, whose scrappy, pulse-quickening punk combined doo-wop vocals and surf-rock scuzz. They released music through local DIY labels—Midwest Action, Tall Pat, Impossible Colors—or just put it out themselves… MORE

Remembering the Big Boss Lady
“There’s nobody else in music history quite like Dunson, a no-nonsense drummer and singer who also wrote hundreds upon hundreds of songs. Women aren’t just rare as blues drummers; they often get short shrift in the genre across the board.. MORE

Calling all rat lovers
If you, like me, are a fan of the humble city rat, then the relationship between our fair city and New York is an instructive one. Like all things New York, the allure of America’s biggest city seems to make everything, including its relationship to the quintessential urban rodent, more grandiose… MORE
