Dear Friends of Greentown Labs,
More Greentown startups are innovating in electricity and energy than in any other sector. It’s not hard to see why—electricity generation alone is currently responsible for 27 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions, and for hard-to-decarbonize applications where electrification isn’t possible, we’ll need new fuels and other solutions that deliver energy without carbon emissions.
To tackle emissions in this sector, we need collaborative innovations that change how energy is generated, stored, transported, and consumed—challenges that our startups are working on day in and day out. Take Lignium Energy, which transforms problematic manure into odorless combustion pellets that can be used as inexpensive, climate-friendly fuel and provide a new source of revenue to farmers, or Form Energy, which is pioneering cost-effective, multi-day energy storage and just announced its first iron-air battery manufacturing facility.
This January, we’re launching two exciting endeavors to advance electricity and energy innovations. First is Go Energize 2023, a Greentown Go startup-corporate partnerships accelerator with Vineyard Wind and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center focused on solutions for responsible offshore wind project development. Applications are due April 4; view the full RFP here.
The second initiative is the inaugural TEX-E Prize, which is accepting applications through Jan. 29 from Texas student entrepreneurs who are developing energy transition solutions! This multi-round startup competition is part of the Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy (TEX-E), a first-of-a-kind collaboration among Greentown, MIT’s Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship, and universities across Texas to create a powerful, student-driven energy entrepreneurship ecosystem in and around Houston.
Know someone who should apply to Go Energize 2023 or the TEX-E Prize? We’d appreciate your help spreading the word by forwarding them this email!
Read on for our members’ latest milestones, upcoming events, and more—and as always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you want to get involved with or support our community. Thank you for your commitment to climate action!
Warmly, The Greentown Labs Team
