CNN’s Donald Trump Town Hall Was Essentially a Campaign Rally
Good morning from the Hive newsroom! It’s hard to defend the disaster that was CNN’s town hall with Donald Trump, who, as Bess Levin recaps, predictably hijacked the Wednesday event. The former president won constant laughter and applause from the audience, even for his comments on the debt-ceiling standoff, which Eric Lutz writes offered “perhaps the clearest distillation of his and his party’s utter nihilism.”
Meanwhile, CNN chief Chris Licht has stood by his network’s decision to platform Trump. But inside the newsroom, “the mood is absolutely the lowest it’s been in the Licht tenure,” one staffer tells Charlotte Klein and Joe Pompeo.
