Chauvin appeals conviction in George Floyd’s murder to the Minnesota Supreme Court
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has appealed his murder conviction in the killing of George Floyd to the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Chauvin’s attorney, William Mohrman, argues that the district judge’s decision not to move the proceedings out of Minneapolis deprived Chauvin of a fair trial.
The Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld Chauvin’s conviction in February, but Mohrman is now asking the state’s highest court to overturn the verdict.
“We’re very hopeful that the Minnesota Supreme Court will accept review of the case,” Mohrman said.
The Minnesota Supreme Court could agree to hear Chauvin’s appeal, in which case it would ask each side for detailed briefs and later set a date for oral arguments. Or it could let the Court of Appeals ruling stand.
Morhman wrote in the petition that the case presents the state Supreme Court with important questions on “developing and clarifying due process requirements to transfer venue when there is unprecedented pervasive pretrial publicity coupled with community violence.”
Herman, Minnesota bachelors still cherish memories of ’90s ‘Bachelormania’ love hunt
In the mid-1990s, the town of Herman, Minnesota, had a serious gender imbalance, with 8 men for every woman.
To address this imbalance, the town’s economic development coordinator organized a “Bachelorfest” event, in which 78 bachelors were actioned off at the Grant County Fair, and women were invited to come and bid on them.
Bachelorfest was a huge success, and it helped to attract new women to the town. Many of the bachelors who participated in the event ended up finding love, and some of them even got married.
Some of the Herman bachelors even went on national TV shows like Leeza Gibbons and Oprah Winfrey. In fact, after former Herman bachelor, Gary Findlay, was featured in a story about Bachelormania on 20/20, his phone started ringing off the hook.
“It was at least 500 letters and Federal Express, Speedy, the mailman. They were in my yard every day with fruit baskets, bottles of champagne, flowers, and of course all the letters. It was really amazing,” said Gary.
One of those letters was from his current wife, Rhonda, who grew up on a dairy farm in Underwood 53 miles away. She captured Gary’s attention and ultimately his heart.
Gary wasn’t the only Herman bachelor who found lasting love during that time. His brother Dan met his wife Bonnie after answering a personals ad Bonnie put in the local paper after watching the same story on 20/20.
