Plus … Trans inmate will move to women’s facility after suing Minnesota DOC.
Happening today
⛈️Partly cloudy early followed by scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. High temperatures in the mid-80s. As we head into the weekend, it’ll still be hot, but the humidity starts to fall a little bit especially as we go into the day on Sunday. Saturday will feature a high of around 88 degrees with some late-day isolated thunderstorms. Sunday will be hot, with a high near 90 degrees — a pleasant heat, with lower humidity.
🎨 Minneapolis Park Markets begin today. These new markets establish a place for local businesses and makers to sell goods and services. They will be held at Lake Harriet, Minnehaha Falls, Water Works, and The Commons this summer. This new initiative hope to create attractions that enhance the sense of community at parks while helping local entrepreneurs, producers and artists share their goods and services and grow their business ventures.

Trans inmate will move to women’s facility after suing Minnesota DOC
A transgender woman named Christina Lusk has reached a settlement with the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) that will allow her to transfer to a women’s prison. The DOC will also pay her $495,000.
Lusk had been incarcerated in a men’s prison since 2018, and she sued the DOC in June 2022 alleging that she had been misgendered, harassed, and denied gender-affirming healthcare.
Lusk will transfer to the women’s facility in Shakopee next week, marking the first time a transgender person has moved to a facility matching their gender identity in Minnesota.
“Inmates would heckle her, heckle her roommates… call her ‘it,’ that sort of thing. And then there were staff who would say things to her, such as, ‘You know, you’re a man in a men’s prison. I’m not going to treat you like a woman. I’m not going to use your proper name and pronouns,” Jess Braverman, legal director at Gender Justice, said.
“This journey has brought extreme challenges, and I have endured so much. My hope is that nobody has to go through the same set of circumstances. I relied on my faith, and I never gave up hope. I can truly say that I am a strong, proud, transgender woman, and my name is Christina Lusk,” she said in a press release.
A grandmother was attacked by a bear while caring for her dog. The attack occurred just after midnight on Friday, May 26 near Nisswa on Gull Lake where the family has had a cherished cabin for decades.
She suffered deep gashes to her upper body including chest, shoulders and back. She showed off the now torn, zip-up hoodie she had on at the time. She promised to stitch up the holes with bear paw patches, an example of how she is taking her up-close encounter in stride.
The victim’s family immediately rushed her to the Emergency Room where she was given antibiotics for the cuts and scratches she suffered, fortunately she was not bitten. So, doctors did not believe she needed any rabies treatment. She told FOX 9, she will be off work for at least three weeks because of her painful condition.
“I thought it was like a raccoon. And so, I ran towards it,” she stated. “But there was no Zeus and there was no raccoon. There was a bear coming at me!”
“I shocked him. We were both scared. I surprised him. I’m not. No, I didn’t think I was going to die. I thought, oh, sh-t, I interrupted a bear,” she concluded.
