Friends of Greentown,

Spring has definitely sprung here in Boston, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you in the next month both here at Greentown and at a few upcoming conferences I am excited to be attending—first, the MIT Energy Conference today, then the EarthX E-Capital Summit in Dallas on April 19-21 (if you would like to register as an investor, the deadline is Friday!), and then NREL’s Industry Growth Forum in Denver on May 1-3. Please reach out to me if you will be at any of these events, I’d love to say hello.

Jumping into it, here are April and May events you won’t want to miss:

  • April 20: Join us in Boston for our April EnergyBar, in partnership with Boston Ballet and the Netherlands Innovation Network, where we will present a multimedia pop-up experience dome of La Mer, a ballet about ocean preservation in celebration of Earth Day.
  • April 27: Join us in Boston for Green Justice: A Climate Crisis Conversation. This invite-only event features a screening of Mossville: When Great Trees Fall and a discussion with Massachusetts Climate Chief Melissa Hoffer, Fire River Films Producer Daniel Bennett, and Beacon Climate Innovations Principal Moneer Azzam.
  • April 27: Join us in Houston for our April Transition On Tap networking event, sponsored by Greentown Terawatt Partner Woodside Energy.
  • May 10: Join us in Houston for our Buildings Sector Pitch Day, followed by our May Transition On Tap networking event.
  • May 11: Join us in Boston for our May EnergyBar: Go Move 2022 Final Showcase.

  • May 25: Join us in Houston for a Pitch Day sponsored by BCG X (see more below).

In energy storage, if batteries are marathon runners, then ultracapacitors are sprintersand they’re both crucial parts of a renewable energy grid. florrent’s ultracapacitors are made with super-sustainable hemp from local Black and Indigenous farmers, unlike the majority of ultracapacitors that are made from less sustainable, accessibl, or climate-change-resilient sources. That’s an exciting concept—and even more exciting for Greentown, florrent found the lead investor for their pre-seed round, MassVentures, through Greentown’s Investor Program! Read more about florrent and their experience with both the Investor Program and ACCEL Program here.

Join us virtually or in-person on Wednesday, May 10, for the next installment of our Sector Pitch Day series focused on reducing emissions in the buildings sector. The event will feature a speaking program, startup pitches, and an opportunity to network with entrepreneurs, corporates, and investors working in the built environment.

Convene with industry leaders in the space to discuss the sector’s challenges and how to collaboratively tackle them. This event is designed for active investors and Greentown’s corporate partners focused on the buildings sector—and we will have a private investor networking lunch before the event starts with startups in the buildings sector that are actively fundraising. If you are interested in joining the lunch, please reply to this email or reach out to Investor Program Coordinator Dan Cliff.

In-person attendees are invited to join us for a startup showcase and our monthly Transition On Tap following the speaking program at our Houston location!

Greentown Labs’ Pilot Digest, which we launched late last year and shared with you in Q1, will be coming out again on May 24. When it comes to solving the climate crisis, there is a pressing need to scale, implement, and commercialize new innovations as quickly as possible. New technologies need commercial validation, and often the quickest path to market is through existing incumbents. This Digest is an aggregation of our member startups that are currently seeking pilot projects with commercial or industrial partners. Those projects can range in scale, scope, and cost—all of which is laid out in detail in a quarterly newsletter with a PDF, similar to the Deal Flow Digest. It will be your go-to resource to learn about our members’ planned pilot projects and how you can assist in scaling their climate solutions, either through hosting a pilot or supporting them financially.

If you are interested in receiving the most recent Pilot Digest and future editions, please reach out to Dan Cliff.

The rapidly unfolding energy transition will require a robust early-stage investment community to fund the creation of new technologies—and Houston is home to this type of vibrant investment ecosystem. Join Greentown Houston and BCG X on May 25 for a pitch competition featuring Greentown startups. Prizes include a $10,000 non-dilutive cash prize and a workshop with BCG X, and there will be a fan-favorite award selected by the audience, so be sure to join us if you want a vote!

If you have any questions about this event or would be interested in sponsoring future pitch days in Houston, please reach out to Dan Cliff.

Check out the $147M+ our members and alumni raised since last month’s newsletter:

  • Veloce Energy, a startup that is streamlining the entire process of connecting, designing, installing, expanding, and operating EV charging systems, closed its initial round of Series A financing.
