And the Oscar for Nudist Anarchy Goes To…
|
The story behind a pivotal scene in the Oscar-nominated Triangle of Sadness is almost as wild as the sequence itself. As director Ruben Östlund tells it, he wanted to film on the Greek island of Euboea, at a beach called Chiliadou—which, he says, is typically inhabited by anarchists who use it as a nudist beach. “We were very nervous that we had to convince anarchists that we should be able to shoot this film here,” he explains to Rebecca Ford. Eventually, he says, they were able to find the leader of the anarchists group (an oxymoron in itself), and pay to get access to the beach. As Ford’s interview shows, that’s just the beginning of the story.
Elsewhere in HWD, Hadley Hall Meares digs into three books about the inimitable Cary Grant; RRR director SS Rajamouli breaks down another pivotal scene: his film’s vibrant dance sequence, set to the Oscar-nominated earworm “Naatu Naatu”; Natalie Jarvey takes us through this year’s unusually starry crop of Academy-nominated short films; and January Jones has a plea for Hollywood casting directors.
