The royal visit capped an outstanding year at Greentown Labs. We couldn’t be more proud of our members’ accomplishments in 2022, from collectively raising more than $1.9B to advance their solutions, to deploying their technologies with a climate justice lens, to partnering with corporates and the public sector to accelerate their commercialization.
Here’s a look back at some shining moments:
We were thrilled to see startup-focused partnerships develop throughout the climatetech ecosystem. Our Greentown Go programs—which rebranded from Greentown Launch in April—and the Carbon to Value Initiative brought 30 startups and a star-studded lineup of corporates together to form partnerships to advance building tech, hydrogen, supply chain innovations, automotive materials solutions, and carbontech. Meanwhile, our Investor Program made over 480 curated connections between our members and our network of 1,000 investors.
We also expanded our partnership efforts with the Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy (TEX-E)—a program designed to connect Houston and Boston’s ecosystems to advance climate solutions. TEX-E is a collaboration among Greentown, MIT’s Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship, and universities across Texas to create a powerful, student-driven entrepreneurship ecosystem in Houston. Just this week, we announced the first-ever TEX-E Prize, and students can apply to this startup competition now through Jan. 22, 2023! Want to keep up to date on TEX-E? Sign up here.
We made equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice central to everything we do here at Greentown. At this year’s Climatetech Summit—our biggest event of the year—we announced a new accelerator for BIPOC-led startups: Advancing Climatetech & Clean Energy Leaders (ACCEL). A partnership with Browning the Green Space, ACCEL will provide underrepresented founders access to funding, networking connections, resources, and opportunities that structural inequities put out of reach. Applications are open through Dec. 23 (reminder: founders can submit a video with their application), and you can subscribe to ACCEL updates here!
Our EDIJ efforts extended beyond ACCEL; in 2022, we held a Power Your Future Career Day to engage local high-school students in climatetech career pathways, and held Access to Success investor events at both our incubators to provide platforms for our startups’ underrepresented founders. Greentown looks forward to continuing our commitment to EDIJ in 2023 and beyond.
We saw unprecedented tailwinds and momentum for climate action, and worked with our startups to translate these into member success. The pieces of climate legislation passed this summer, including the Inflation Reduction Act, ushered in a new era for climatetech—and our 200+ startups are quickly working to tap into this unprecedented federal support. The buzz around climate solutions was evident at each event we hosted this year, through the Prince and Princess of Wales’ visit to Greentown, and above all, by the fantastic successes our members saw throughout 2022. Take a look at some of our startups most impressive milestones here.
As we look ahead to 2023, we can’t wait to support the startups, technologies, and partnerships that will be critical in this decade of momentous climate action. Want to be part of this important work? Here’s how you can engage with Greentown and our members in the new year:
- Startups: apply for Greentown membership.
- Corporates: explore partnering with Greentown and our startups.
- Investors: get connected with our world-changing entrepreneurs.
- Job seekers: work at one of our startups.
- Other climate champions: attend an event—we’ll be announcing January and February events soon!
Onward, The Greentown Labs Team
