It’s one of my favorite springtime events, and not just because I’ve tabled it in the past. Most zinesters don’t make a living selling their wares, which also means that people who spend their spare time and labor writing, designing, and printing a zine are almost always going to be producing a publication because they love doing it.
And I love to see what Chicagoans are dedicated to documenting in the form of a zine. People travel to Chicago from out of state to table Zine Fest too, but I relish the fact that this gathering grants me the opportunity to meet other locals I might not otherwise bump into. And those interactions can radically alter my understanding of creative communities in this city and expand my own.
And, of course, I’m excited to support my friends who are selling their zines at the fest. I’m particularly excited to see what Reader senior graphic designer Amber Huff will present. CZF’s Zine Exhibition Day returns to Plumbers Union Hall (1340 W. Washington) on Saturday, May 20; it’s free to attend and runs from 11 AM to 6 PM.
One quick programming note before I leave you for the week; starting this afternoon, I’ll be interviewing several of the Chicago musicians performing at this year’s Best of Chicago party on the Reader’s Instagram page. Keep an eye on the Reader’s IG for details!
Sincerely, |
