☀️ Sunshine and clouds mixed. Areas of smoke and haze are possible. High temperatures near 60. Looking ahead to the weekend, it’ll feature plenty of sunshine with highs in the 70s. Next week is looking toasty, with highs in the 80s possible early in the week.

🏛️ Governor Tim Walz will sign the public safety bill into law, including universal background checks and red flag laws that allow law enforcement to intervene when someone is at high risk of injuring themselves or others with a firearm.

🏫 Saint Paul Public Schools announced a new East African Elementary Magnet School that will open in September 2023. The PreK-5 school is being designed in collaboration with members of the East African community who have asked the district for a high-quality, culturally responsive educational program that meets their needs. Tonight, families are invited to Midway Peace Park to gather with the community, meet the principal, and register for the upcoming school year. 

Minnetonka apartment building for 55+ puts ‘senior’ in senior prom

• Residents at a Minnetonka apartment building for people 55 and older hosted their first-ever prom.
• The event was organized by the staff at Avidor Minnetonka and was free for residents to attend. The event featured a live band, dancing, and a photo booth.

“I said, ‘Hey, we’re all seniors. It’s prom season. Let’s have senior prom.’ and then they said, ‘oh, we can do that,'” said Cathy Kurtz, a resident who suggested the idea.

“It really gets everybody together as a community. Or if we have some of those outfits in the back of our closet and have nowhere to wear them. Well, here you can,” said Avidor Minnetonka Lifestyle Coordinator Denise Pederson.

For some, it’s their first prom because they didn’t attend one in high school.

“When I was a teenager, we were moving around with my father’s job, and so I was not comfortable enough in my high school to go to my own senior prom. So this is my first. I’m excited,” said Kurtz.
